The goal of the Security Volunteers shall be to provide a safe, secure, and enjoyable environment for the participants and staff at the Warriors and Warlords event. All Security Volunteers shall follow the guidelines below during their shift.
Conduct Guidelines
- Maintain a professional attitude and appearance. Dress in appropriate pre-1600 garb is required.
- Extra pockets and modern items may be used; however do your best to conceal these items (flashlights, radios, etc).
- Personal safety is paramount! You cannot help someone else if your safety is compromised.
General Guidelines
- Arrive at the Security tent 10 minutes before the scheduled shift for a briefing from the Security Coordinator or Security Lieutenant.
- Wear the Security arm band on the left arm at all times during the shift.
- Keep detailed notes (date, time, names, location, disposition, etc) of any incident and turn them in at the end of the shift to the Security Coordinator or Security Lieutenant.
- Patrol the assigned zone (zone map will be available at WW). The goal of keeping Security Volunteers in the different zones is to provide adequate coverage throughout the event. You may deviate from this guideline if one of the following are met:
- Security Coordinator, Security Lieutenant, Autocrat, or First Aid personnel advise you to move to an area in another zone.
- Security Coordinator, Security Lieutenant, Autocrat, First Aid personnel, or another Security Volunteer calls for backup.
- An emergency is seen in another zone that you need to immediately respond to.
- Put out any un-attended fires. *In-ground fires are NOT permitted!*
- First announce your presence and if no one responds, put out the fire. If someone does respond, advise them that fires must be attended at all times.
- Note the date, time, and location of the fire and the disposition.
- Enforce all Local, State, and Federal laws and Warriors and Warlords rules.
- Alcohol and Tobacco are not allowed on School property per State Law. No Exceptions for those camping on School property.
- Keep supplies full in the area restrooms. The Security Coordinator or Security Lieutenant will have the key to the storage room if needed.
- Missing/Lost Children.
- Contact the Security Coordinator or Security Lieutenant via radio immediately.
- Attempt to find out as much information as possible (parents/children’s names, address, where they last saw the missing/lost person or parents.
- Take complete notes for the incident report.
- Take the reporting party or lost child to the Security Tent and keep them there. Other staff members will begin the search for the missing/lost party.
- Once found, bring the missing/lost party to the Security Tent to re-unite them with the reporting party or lost child.
- If the missing/lost party cannot be found in a reasonable amount of time, the local authorities will be called to handle the situation.
Use of Force Guidelines
All Security Volunteers shall abide by the following guidelines, regardless of past experience on the job or volunteering.
- Physical contact by Security Volunteers is strictly prohibited unless one or more of the following are met.
- Breaking up individuals involved in a fight which, if allowed to continue, would cause eminent danger to the participants or bystanders.
- Backup will be called immediately before taking action.
- A victim is in eminent danger of bodily harm and intervention is required immediately.
- If intervention is not immediately required, local authorities will be called to handle the situation.
- The Security Coordinator or an Autocrat direct the Security Volunteer to physically detain an individual or remove them from the property.
- If the subject being removed becomes violent, local authorities will be called to handle the situation.
- A First Aid staff member or volunteer requires assistance.
- A subject is physically unable to help themselves.
- Example: An intoxicated individual who is near a fire or in danger of hurting themselves (tripping, falling down a hill, etc)
- A local authority directs the Security Volunteer to assist them.
- In all other situations, the Security Volunteer will attempt to de-escalate the situation verbally and use backup as needed.
- Often, 2 or 3 Security Volunteers can calm a person down just by their presence vs. having just 1 Security Volunteer try to calm the person down.
- Your safety is paramount. If you do not feel comfortable dealing with a situation, call for backup and/or local authorities. You are never required to intervene. You may simply observe and report the details of the situation to others.
