Blacksmithing Classes
The Blacksmiths of Smith's corner will once again be demonstrating and teaching a large variety of classes for beginning blacksmiths to classes for more advanced smiths. Learn to make your first s-hook or make a gryphon head or learn the secrets of Damascus Pattern welding. Please see the large notice board at Smiths corner for class descriptions and times
THURSDAY JULY 10
Fundamental Footwork for Fighting

No matter what field you fight on or what forms you use on that field, footwork is fundamental! We'll draw from a variety of sources to explore ways of moving the feet (and the body) for heavy rapier, cut & thrust, and armored combat. We'll work towards building a lexicon for footwork and look at ways to construct your own movement drills. If time allows, we may be able to see how footwork can help solve recurring problems for some students. Students should wear comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement. Period shoes or boots with smooth leather soles (or smooth-soled modern dress shoes) are helpful, but not necessary. Notebooks, pens, and water are recommended.
Intermediate Footwork for Fighting

A continuation of the fundamentals class, we’ll examine more complex movements and compound movements to find a place of temporary safety and deliver an effective attack to the opponent. Make Your Own Fabric Swatch Book

A Methodology for Teaching Rapier to Individuals and Groups

What is the difference between teaching one person and ten? What is the same? How do you structure a lesson plan? Drills or no drills? What should you show them, and when? A discussion about how can teach what we do to people who want to do it. Required gear: rapier, pencil, paper for taking notes.

How to make an Award Scroll

Combat Geometry

Examines the use of lines, angles and arcs in rapier, and how they create both a better offense and stronger defense. No math needed! Material will be drawn primarily from late period Italianrapier systems. Class is hands-on. Required gear: mask, rapier, gorget. Some limited loaner gear may be available.

Bladesmithing

This class is a hands on bladesmithing class.Participants will start with a bar of steel and make a knife from it. There will be forging, grinding, filing and heat treating of the knife. A fully usable blade can be made during the event.
Two Easy Stitches

Learn some basic embroidery skills, or come to refresh your knowledge. We’ll learn two basic stitches, stem and chain, and see how these can be used to personalize and decorate you garb, create a favor, and otherwise wow your friends. Warning, these skills come with increased risk of drool from passing admirers and requests for presents from your friends. Cost: $5 for a starter packet of materials, or bring your own fabric, embroidery floss, needle, etc.
Novice Nalbinding

Introduction to the Italian Longsword, Part I

Class Size: 14 people.
The longsword is the centerpiece of the art taught by Fiore de Liberi and Filipo Vadi, and their manuscripts detail its use in both unarmored and armored situations. This class will be a very brief overview of some of the basic principles of this art. For active participation, students should have at least an appropriate longsword simulator. Students should wear comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement. Period shoes or boots with smooth leather soles (or smooth-soled modern dress shoes) are helpful, but not necessary. Notebooks, pens, and water are recommended.
Gentle Introduction to the Recorder

The recorder is one of the most popular instruments in the SCA, but many people have difficulty with the basics: how to hold the instrument, how hard to blow, how to read music, keep time, and match pitches while playing with others. Join Christian and a couple T.A. (that's "tooting assistants") as they walk you through the first several lessons on the recorder.

Early Period Northern European Trousers

Time: 10:00am - 11:00am
This class is mainly for those with early period Germanic, Norse or Gaelic personas (and those who make their clothes), who would like to be able to create more period styles of trousers. Class will focus on three types of trousers: the Thorsberg trousers, the Damendorf trousers, and Gaelic truis. I will briefly explain the history of each type of trouser, then we will measure and I will talk about construction details. A handout explaining measurements and construction will be provided. Please bring a measuring tape (there will be some extras for those who don't have one). If you are making trousers for someone else, and they are available, you can bring them along to be measured.
Advanced Nalbinding Class

This class is intended for those who have already learned and are confident with the basics of nalbinding and would like to learn more stitches. The following stitches will be taught: Oslo, Mammen (or Korgen), Brodén's, York, Dalby, and Ȧsle mitten stitch. This class is open to those who have taken the previous class Novice Nalbinding the day before. Materials will be available for those who did not bring their own (needle and yarn).
Kenya's Continuing Middle Eastern Dance Class

A generally intermediate level Middle Eastern dance class, but any and all are welcome to attend. We will begin with advancing basic dance movements. The 2nd half of the class will be working on some choreographies and learning to apply the movements into a more complete dance.

Eastern Orthodox Iconography

An introduction to iconography in the Eastern Orthodox Church. We'll investigate some of the historical origins and influences that shaped the development of iconography, cover a few of the major iconographic centers, discuss some stylistic elements, and look in depth at a few famous icon.

Join Leyla for a brief introduction to embroidery and surface design techniques used in 10th century Yemen. Using "modern" materials, participants will produce small samples of Tiraz fabrics suitable for the Abbasid elite. No previous experience with embroidery or calligraphy required. Potentially messy (involves fabric paint).
Beyond The T-Tunic

This is a garb class on how to take your garb from plain to bling! We'll talk about adding trim, beading, embroidery, gores, accessories. Mysteries of the Jubilee Set Revealed!

A collection of 18 renaissance tunes has become known as "The Jubilee Set", and has become a common repertoire of SCA musicians around the Midwest. We'll spend about ten minutes revealing the mysteries of the collection --and it'll take ten minutes 'cause we'll be talkin' slow-- and the rest of the time, we'll play through the set. Bring instruments. If you have a personal copy of the Jubilee Set, please bring it. No class limit. Young people welcome.

Five ways to wrap a sari
